Granny Squares

February 25, 2008

So this lovely multi-colored afghan is what inspired me to finally learn how to make granny squares. My mother made this when I was 4 or 5. It’s really big. She doesn’t remember how long it took her to make.

It took me two days to really learn the pattern for a granny square. Four days if you count my sitting there puzzling out the pattern directions.

I really dislike reading patterns. I always feel dumb when I read them because it feels like I am reading a math problem and math was never one of my strong points. Seriously–have you tried to read a pattern before? But just like with a math problem I had to break it down into smaller bits until I understood it.

You should have seen me the moment I realized I knew how to make one of these squares. I was beaming from ear to ear and shoving the square in my husband’s field of vision as I gushed on and on about it.

I called my mother immediately to let her know. She of course laughed finding my enthusiasm amusing. We discussed the myriad of possibilities of what this meant. I could make afghan squares, make pot holders, or trivets. The possibilities were endless. I of course decided that I needed to start with a large project and make an afghan blanket. That was a few weeks ago…
